Hot water or steam

The quickest way to tell is the water. A hot water system is a sealed loop under pressure with a gauge reading psi; a steam system boils, sends vapor up and lets the condensate run back down by gravity. They are serviced differently and they fail differently, and knowing which you have shortens the first call.
