Carbon monoxide

The reason CPSC ties annual servicing to CO is that the failure is in the combustion or the venting rather than in the fuel. A system that heats perfectly well can be venting badly, and nothing inside the house will tell you except an alarm.

Hot water or steam

Steam and hot water are two machines wearing one word. One runs at a few pounds of vapor pressure and depends on pitch and venting; the other runs as a pumped loop and depends on pressure and air removal. Say which you have when you call and the conversation starts a step further along.

What to ask whoever comes

Ask whether the temperature control was commissioned or merely fitted. DOE requires an automatic means for adjusting water temperature on hot water boilers, and a control nobody set up delivers none of what it is for.
