Boiler Repair in White Plains, NY
In White Plains, 25% of households heat with oil and 59% with gas — enough of each that neither is an assumption anybody should make about your house without looking.
In brief
A town that splits its heating has both trades in it. White Plains does, at 25% of households on oil and 59% on gas, so knowing which appliance is in the basement before telephoning saves the wrong one turning up.

How White Plains heats
Where neither fuel dominates, nobody assumes anything about your house, which is an advantage. Say which fuel and whether it is hot water or steam when you call, and the first visit starts further along.
| Households in White Plains | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 25% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 59% |
| Electricity | 14% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 2% |
Across the 159 towns we cover in New York, 17% of households heat with oil. White Plains sits about level with that.

The Census asks what the house is heated with, not what equipment does the heating. The oil share above therefore includes furnaces as well as boilers.
Carbon monoxide
"Have the heating system professionally inspected and serviced annually to ensure proper operation" is CPSC’s wording, and it is a safety recommendation about combustion and venting rather than an efficiency suggestion.

Hot water or steam
Knowing whether the system is hot water or steam saves a visit. A steam boiler has a sight glass and a low water cutoff; a hot water boiler has a circulator, an expansion tank and a pressure gauge worth reading. Almost nothing that is true of one is true of the other.
DOE regulates them separately too, at slightly different AFUE minimums by fuel and type.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask what the combustion readings were and whether they changed since last year. One set of numbers is a snapshot; two are a trend, and a trend is what shows something drifting before it fails.

Checking a plumber in New York
New York issues no state plumbing license. New York City licenses Master and Journeyman Plumbers through the Department of Buildings; elsewhere in the state it is your own city, town or county. Start here. Ask the contractor which municipality licenses them and confirm it with that office before work begins.
A boiler is not a furnace, and the person you want knows the difference.Tell us it is a boiler, tell us what the gauge reads if you can see it, and we will route you to somebody in your area who works on them. You are never charged. Should other work in White Plains need doing, say it on the call.
