Boiler Repair in Rome, NY
9% of Rome heats with oil, which makes a burner the exception on most streets here. Knowing that in advance is the difference between a scheduled visit and a February emergency.
In brief
In Rome, fuel oil accounts for 9% of household heating against 73% for gas. Where oil is this much of a minority, finding somebody who services burners matters more than describing what the boiler is doing.

How Rome heats
Being the only burner on the street has one advantage worth taking: the same contractor will remember your system. Where oil is common a visit is routine and anonymous; where it is rare it tends to be the same person each year, and continuity is worth more than it sounds on a machine that is serviced once a year.
| Households in Rome | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 9% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 73% |
| Electricity | 15% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 3% |
Across the 159 towns we cover in New York, 17% of households heat with oil. Rome sits about level with that.
Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates, table B25040 (house heating fuel), 2023 release. Universe: 17,737 occupied housing units. The Census asks what the house is heated with, not what equipment does the heating. The oil share above therefore includes furnaces as well as boilers.
Carbon monoxide
CPSC recommends CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, and specifically not in kitchens or above fuel-burning appliances. The instinct is to put one next to the boiler, and that is the one place the guidance says not to.

Hot water or steam
Two systems share the name boiler and very little else. Steam distributes vapor and returns condensate by gravity; hot water pushes water round a loop with a pump and holds it under pressure. Radiators can look identical from the room.
The boiler tells you which: a sight glass means steam, a pressure gauge and an expansion tank mean hot water.

What to ask whoever comes
If a replacement is proposed, ask what ruled out the components. Circulators, controls, expansion tanks and relief valves are replaceable, and most faults are one of them rather than the vessel.

Checking a plumber in New York
New York issues no state plumbing license. New York City licenses Master and Journeyman Plumbers through the Department of Buildings; elsewhere in the state it is your own city, town or county. Start here. Ask the contractor which municipality licenses them and confirm it with that office before work begins.
A boiler is not a furnace, and the person you want knows the difference.Tell us it is a boiler, tell us what the gauge reads if you can see it, and we will route you to somebody in your area who works on them. You are never charged. Any trouble at an address in Rome is welcome here.
