Boiler Repair in Hamburg, MN
Oil heats 6% of homes in Hamburg. If that includes yours, the thing to sort out before a cold snap is who services oil equipment nearby — not because it is hard, but because there are fewer of them.
In brief
The firms that service an oil burner are fewer where oil is a minority fuel, and in Hamburg it heats 6% of homes against 70% on gas. That makes the fuel the first thing to establish rather than the symptom.

How Hamburg heats
A minority fuel means minority parts. A nozzle and a filter are ordinary stock for somebody who works on oil weekly and a special trip for somebody who does not, which is the difference between a part on the van and a part on order.
| Households in Hamburg | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 6% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 70% |
| Electricity | 15% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 9% |
Across the 2 towns we cover in Minnesota, 5% of households heat with oil. Hamburg sits about level with that.
Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates, table B25040 (house heating fuel), 2023 release. Universe: 384 occupied housing units. This is a fuel table and not an equipment table. It cannot separate a boiler from a furnace, which is why every figure here is stated as a fuel share.
Carbon monoxide
CPSC recommends CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, and specifically not in kitchens or above fuel-burning appliances. The instinct is to put one next to the boiler, and that is the one place the guidance says not to.

Hot water or steam
Knowing whether the system is hot water or steam saves a visit. A steam boiler has a sight glass and a low water cutoff; a hot water boiler has a circulator, an expansion tank and a pressure gauge worth reading. Almost nothing that is true of one is true of the other.
DOE regulates them separately too, at slightly different AFUE minimums by fuel and type.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask whether the temperature control was commissioned or merely fitted. DOE requires an automatic means for adjusting water temperature on hot water boilers, and a control nobody set up delivers none of what it is for.

Checking a plumber in Minnesota
Minnesota licenses are issued by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, which publishes a public search you can use before work begins. The Minnesota lookup also shows bond status and any enforcement action.
A boiler is not a furnace, and the person you want knows the difference.Tell us it is a boiler, tell us what the gauge reads if you can see it, and we will route you to somebody in your area who works on them. You are never charged. Boilers apart, Hamburg can use this number for anything.
