Boiler Repair in North East, MD
In North East, 13% of homes burn oil. A real minority — enough that the equipment is here, few enough that finding somebody who services it regularly is worth doing before you need one.
In brief
An oil-fired boiler is the exception in North East: 13% of households heat with fuel oil and 35% with gas. The figure measures house heating fuel rather than the appliance, which is why the fuel and the make are both worth having before anybody is called.

How North East heats
The equipment is no different for being uncommon here. It is still a closed loop under pressure with a relief valve and an expansion tank, and the gauge still says more than anything else on the appliance.
| Households in North East | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 13% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 35% |
| Electricity | 46% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 6% |
Across the 109 towns we cover in Maryland, 13% of households heat with oil. North East sits about level with that.
Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates, table B25040 (house heating fuel), 2023 release. Universe: 7,184 occupied housing units. The Census asks what the house is heated with, not what equipment does the heating. The oil share above therefore includes furnaces as well as boilers.
Carbon monoxide
"Have the heating system professionally inspected and serviced annually to ensure proper operation" is CPSC’s wording, and it is a safety recommendation about combustion and venting rather than an efficiency suggestion.

Hot water or steam
Look for a sight glass. A short vertical tube of water on the side of the boiler means steam, and with it a low water cutoff that has to be checked. No sight glass, a pressure gauge and a small pump on a pipe means hot water.

What to ask whoever comes
If a replacement is proposed, ask what ruled out the components. Circulators, controls, expansion tanks and relief valves are replaceable, and most faults are one of them rather than the vessel.
