Hot water or steam

If there is a gauge reading in pounds per square inch and a tank somewhere above or beside the boiler, it is a hot water system. If there is a glass tube on the side of the boiler with a water line visible in it, it is steam. The two fail differently and are serviced differently.

Steam is the older arrangement and survives mostly in older housing, which is where a good share of the oil heat in this state is.

What to ask whoever comes

If a replacement is proposed, ask what ruled out the components. Circulators, controls, expansion tanks and relief valves are replaceable, and most faults are one of them rather than the vessel.
