Boiler Repair in Wayland, MA
Wayland splits its heating: 25% on oil, 65% on gas. Both feed boilers, and the two are different machines to own.
In brief
A town that splits its heating has both trades in it. Wayland does, at 25% of households on oil and 65% on gas, so knowing which appliance is in the basement before telephoning saves the wrong one turning up.

How Wayland heats
A town split between fuels usually has both trades working in it, which is worth knowing when you are choosing somebody. The question to ask is not whether they can work on a boiler but how many they see in a month — those are different answers.
| Households in Wayland | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 25% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 65% |
| Electricity | 10% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | under 1% |
Across the 129 towns we cover in Massachusetts, 21% of households heat with oil. Wayland sits 8 points below that.

The Census asks what the house is heated with, not what equipment does the heating. The oil share above therefore includes furnaces as well as boilers.
Carbon monoxide
"Have the heating system professionally inspected and serviced annually to ensure proper operation" is CPSC’s wording, and it is a safety recommendation about combustion and venting rather than an efficiency suggestion.

Hot water or steam
Radiators tell you too. A steam radiator has one pipe, or two, and a small vent that hisses; a hot water radiator has a pipe in and a pipe out and a bleed screw at the top. It is a ten-second check and it decides half the diagnosis.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask what the pressure on the gauge should read for this system and what it reads now. On a hot water boiler those two numbers explain most of the complaints people call about, and almost nobody is told what the target is.

A boiler is not a furnace, and the person you want knows the difference.Tell us it is a boiler, tell us what the gauge reads if you can see it, and we will route you to somebody in your area who works on them. You are never charged. Should other work in Wayland need doing, say it on the call.
