Hot water or steam

If there is a gauge reading in pounds per square inch and a tank somewhere above or beside the boiler, it is a hot water system. If there is a glass tube on the side of the boiler with a water line visible in it, it is steam. The two fail differently and are serviced differently.

Steam is the older arrangement and survives mostly in older housing, which is where a good share of the oil heat in this state is.

Ask whether the appliance is hot water or steam, and what its AFUE is. DOE’s minimums run 82 to 86 percent depending on fuel and type, so those two facts decide what a like-for-like comparison even means.
