Boiler Repair in Jamaica Plain, MA
11% of homes in Jamaica Plain heat with oil. That is a small share, and the practical consequence is about availability rather than about the boiler itself.
In brief
In Jamaica Plain, fuel oil accounts for 11% of household heating against 65% for gas. Where oil is this much of a minority, finding somebody who services burners matters more than describing what the boiler is doing.

How Jamaica Plain heats
Being the only burner on the street has one advantage worth taking: the same contractor will remember your system. Where oil is common a visit is routine and anonymous; where it is rare it tends to be the same person each year, and continuity is worth more than it sounds on a machine that is serviced once a year.
| Households in Jamaica Plain | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 11% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 65% |
| Electricity | 22% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 2% |
Across the 129 towns we cover in Massachusetts, 21% of households heat with oil. Jamaica Plain sits 3 points above that.
Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates, table B25040 (house heating fuel), 2023 release. Universe: 17,928 occupied housing units. The Census asks what the house is heated with, not what equipment does the heating. The oil share above therefore includes furnaces as well as boilers.
Carbon monoxide
The reason CPSC ties annual servicing to CO is that the failure is in the combustion or the venting rather than in the fuel. A system that heats perfectly well can be venting badly, and nothing inside the house will tell you except an alarm.

Hot water or steam
Knowing whether the system is hot water or steam saves a visit. A steam boiler has a sight glass and a low water cutoff; a hot water boiler has a circulator, an expansion tank and a pressure gauge worth reading. Almost nothing that is true of one is true of the other.
DOE regulates them separately too, at slightly different AFUE minimums by fuel and type.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask whether the relief valve has discharged. Water near the appliance is often that rather than a leak, and it means pressure reached somewhere it should not have — which is the actual fault to chase.
