Carbon monoxide

Any appliance that burns fuel can produce carbon monoxide when combustion or venting goes wrong, and CPSC describes low to moderate poisoning as producing symptoms "similar to the flu (but without the fever)". Flu without a fever, in winter, in a house with the heating on — which is why it is missed.

Hot water or steam

If there is a gauge reading in pounds per square inch and a tank somewhere above or beside the boiler, it is a hot water system. If there is a glass tube on the side of the boiler with a water line visible in it, it is steam. The two fail differently and are serviced differently.

Steam is the older arrangement and survives mostly in older housing, which is where a good share of the oil heat in this state is.

What to ask whoever comes

Ask whether the temperature control was commissioned or merely fitted. DOE requires an automatic means for adjusting water temperature on hot water boilers, and a control nobody set up delivers none of what it is for.
