Hot water or steam

Two systems share the name boiler and very little else. Steam distributes vapor and returns condensate by gravity; hot water pushes water round a loop with a pump and holds it under pressure. Radiators can look identical from the room.

The boiler tells you which: a sight glass means steam, a pressure gauge and an expansion tank mean hot water.

What to ask whoever comes

Ask whether the fault was diagnosed or inferred. "It is probably the circulator" and "the circulator is drawing no current" are different sentences, and only one of them justifies a part.
