Hot water or steam

If there is a gauge reading in pounds per square inch and a tank somewhere above or beside the boiler, it is a hot water system. If there is a glass tube on the side of the boiler with a water line visible in it, it is steam. The two fail differently and are serviced differently.

Steam is the older arrangement and survives mostly in older housing, which is where a good share of the oil heat in this state is.

What to ask whoever comes

Ask whether the relief valve has discharged. Water near the appliance is often that rather than a leak, and it means pressure reached somewhere it should not have — which is the actual fault to chase.
