Boiler Repair in Houston, DE
In Houston, 27% of households heat with oil and 17% with gas — enough of each that neither is an assumption anybody should make about your house without looking.
In brief
A town that splits its heating has both trades in it. Houston does, at 27% of households on oil and 17% on gas, so knowing which appliance is in the basement before telephoning saves the wrong one turning up.

How Houston heats
Both fuels burn indoors and both can produce carbon monoxide when combustion or venting goes wrong, so CPSC’s guidance does not change with the fuel: alarms on every level and annual professional service, whichever you have.
| Households in Houston | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 27% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 17% |
| Electricity | 52% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 4% |
Across the 32 towns we cover in Delaware, 10% of households heat with oil. Houston is small enough that its own oil share carries too wide a margin of error to place against that figure, so we do not.
Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates, table B25040 (house heating fuel), 2023 release. Universe: 648 occupied housing units. The Census asks what the house is heated with, not what equipment does the heating. The oil share above therefore includes furnaces as well as boilers.
Carbon monoxide
CPSC puts it at more than 200 deaths a year in the United States from CO produced by non-automotive consumer products. Heating equipment is one source among several, and it is the one that runs unattended all winter.

Hot water or steam
Look for a sight glass. A short vertical tube of water on the side of the boiler means steam, and with it a low water cutoff that has to be checked. No sight glass, a pressure gauge and a small pump on a pipe means hot water.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask whether the fault was diagnosed or inferred. "It is probably the circulator" and "the circulator is drawing no current" are different sentences, and only one of them justifies a part.
